Strategic Investment in Chinese Market

Merlin Entertainments has launched the world’s largest LEGOLAND Resort in Shanghai’s Jinshan District, representing a massive US$550m investment in the rapidly growing Asian theme park market [1]. The resort spans 318,000 sq m and features over 75 interactive rides, shows, and attractions built using more than 85 million LEGO bricks [2]. This strategic expansion targets the 2-12-year-old family market, a demographic traditionally underserved by conventional theme parks [3].

Unique Cultural Integration

The park offers a distinctive blend of global LEGO brand identity and local Chinese cultural elements, including the world’s first Journey to the West themed zone called ‘LEGO Monkie Kid’ [4]. A standout feature is the 26-meter tall ‘Dada’ LEGO statue weighing 136 tons, which serves as a dramatic centerpiece and photo opportunity [5]. The resort is divided into eight themed zones, including LEGO Castle, LEGO City, and LEGO Imagination World, ensuring diverse experiences for young visitors [6].

Comprehensive Visitor Experience

Beyond rides, the resort includes a 250-room LEGO-themed hotel with five unique themes and over 1,700 LEGO art models [7]. The park’s environment features 3,161 plants across more than 200 species, creating an immersive landscape [8]. With projected annual attendance of 2.4 million visitors, Merlin Entertainments aims to establish a significant foothold in China’s theme park ecosystem [9].
